FRESHNESS INSTRUCTION
Receiving a bouquet of flowers always brings great joy; however, it sometimes happens that the flowers lose their fresh appearance as early as the next day. To prevent this and extend the longevity of the arrangement, we have prepared a few simple and effective tips on how to properly care for your bouquet to keep it fresh for as long as possible.
Bouquet care instructions:
Step I: Remove the bouquet’s packaging
Although the bouquet wrapping may look very decorative, it is recommended to remove it before placing the flowers in a vase. It primarily serves a protective function during transport and may restrict proper water access to the stems.
Step II: Remove all leaves that may touch the water in the vase
Remove all leaves from the part of the stems that will be placed in water. This helps prevent rotting, keeping the water fresh for longer and extending the lifespan of the flowers.
Step III: Trim the stems at a 45-degree angle
Before placing the flowers in water, trim their stems. It is best to use a sharp knife or floral shears, cutting at a 45-degree angle (regular scissors may crush the stems and damage their structure). This type of cut prevents the vascular tissues from closing and improves water absorption.
It is recommended to trim the stems a few centimeters above the previous cut. The angled cut increases the surface area for water absorption, allowing the flowers to better take in water and nutrients.
*In the case of tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths, the stems should be cut straight. The cut should also be refreshed every time the water is changed, as these flowers tend to “close up,” which restricts water flow.
What else you should pay attention to:
Wash the vase:
The vase in which you place the bouquet should be clean. Use fresh, cool water so that the flowers can stay fresh for as long as possible.
Also, pay attention to the size of the vase. The minimum volume for an average mixed bouquet should not be less than 1-1.5 liters. You can clarify with the florist the desirable amount of water for certain flowers. For example, hyacinths, tulips, amaryllis, callas do not need a large amount of water. The stems of roses, hydrangeas, and astilbes, on the contrary, should be at least halfway in the water.
Fill the vase with clean, cool water:
The water should be clean and cool to keep the flowers fresh for as long as possible.
Add special flower food to the water:
We always include a powdered flower food sachet with our bouquets, which helps extend their freshness. After being cut, flowers lose access to water, nutrients, and natural growth hormones that they previously received from the mother plant. Flower food lowers the pH of the water, improves water and nutrient uptake, and helps reduce bacterial growth.
However, it is important to use it according to the instructions and not exceed the recommended dosage – too much flower food can harm the flowers and “burn” their stems.
It is also worth remembering that flower food does not keep flowers fresh indefinitely. To enjoy your bouquet for longer, regularly change the water and recut the stems.
Place the bouquet in a cool place with fresh air flow:
Place the bouquet in a cool location with access to fresh air. Avoid direct sunlight, drafts, and heat sources such as radiators or fireplaces.
In winter, do not leave flowers in frost or very low temperatures, as this may damage them.
Do not spray flowers with water from above, as this can cause them to deteriorate more quickly.
Avoid placing the bouquet near fruits and vegetables, as the ethylene they release accelerates wilting.
Proper care will help you enjoy the freshness and beauty of your bouquet for longer.
Flower arrangements in boxes or baskets are very popular and visually striking. To preserve their freshness and beauty for as long as possible, it is important to follow a few simple care guidelines.
The main difference between a bouquet and a box arrangement is the presence of floral foam, which stores water and gradually supplies it to the flowers. This ensures a constant access to moisture while also reducing the risk of rotting.
Placing the Flower Arrangement:
• Place the box with flowers in a location away from drafts, radiators, and direct sunlight.
• Avoid keeping the arrangement on a windowsill or in the kitchen, as these places are less favorable for flowers.
• Keep the arrangement away from fruits and vegetables, as proximity to them can be harmful to the flowers.
Proper and Timely Watering:
• Regularly check the condition of the floral foam – it should always be slightly damp.
• Water the arrangement slowly using a watering can with a narrow spout to allow the water to be absorbed by the foam.
• The amount of water depends on the size of the arrangement: small – 30 ml, medium – 50-100 ml, large – 100-150 ml, king size – 250 ml.
• Avoid getting water on leaves and flower buds, as this may cause rotting.
• If you notice fallen leaves and flower petals on the foam, remove them to prevent bacterial growth and extend the freshness of the flowers.
Not recommended:
• Removing flowers from the box or floral foam and transferring them into a vase, as this may shorten their freshness and cause the arrangement to wilt faster.
• Using internet “hacks” such as adding sugar, alcohol, or other substances to the arrangement or water, as this may negatively affect the flowers’ condition.
• Spraying flowers with water from above.
By following these guidelines, the arrangement will stay fresh and continue to delight the eye for a long time.
