General information
Peonies are perennial shrubby or woody plants belonging to the Peoniaceae family, very similar to the Ranunculaceae family, to which they actually belonged originally.
There are more than 6,500 different varieties of peonies, and this list is constantly expanding with new species. The American peony society actively monitors the appearance of new varieties and awards gold medals to outstanding varieties every year. All of these varieties can be divided into three main categories: woody (0.25 to 3.5 metres tall), shrubby (0.25 to 1 metre) and hybrid (which result from crossing the other two categories). They have complex, deeply cut leaves and large, often fragrant flowers, the shades varying from purple and pink to red, white or yellow.
Peonies also have medicinal properties and are often used in traditional medicine. Some types of peony contain biological substances that may have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, helping to improve health.
How to care for your peonies
- Before placing the peonies in the vase, remove the packaging and remove any leaves that may get into the water.
- Trim the ends of their stems at an angle of a few centimetres from the edge, this will help improve water absorption and prolong freshness.
- Choose a large and deep vase so that the stems can fit ¾ into the water. This will fully supply food for the flowering buds.
- Use natural mineral supplements to help peonies stay fresh and beautiful for longer. Follow the instructions included in the package.
- Peonies prefer cool and shady places. Therefore, choose for them a place in the house without draughts, without a heat source (radiators and cookers) and direct sunlight.
- Change the water regularly to prevent the proliferation of bacteria and prolong the freshness of the flowers.
